Colorado Sleep Consultant Services FAQs

Fort Collins Sleep Training

FAQs

Parents often have questions about what sleep training is and the coaching system in itself. As a Fort Collins baby sleep consultant, I’m here to answer any and all questions you have.

IS YOUR PROGRAM A VERSION OF THE "CRY-IT-OUT" (CIO) METHOD?

Fostering loving bonds between parents and their children is why I do what I do. I encourage parents to think of sleep training as a loving act FOR their child and not something they are doing to their child. My role is to help parents be mindful and manage their own anxieties, to give their child the best chance of success.

Many parents worry that sleep training is nothing more than “cry it out” and that they can’t foster a loving bond with their baby if they decide to pursue sleep training. I think of sleep training in the same category as teaching your child to ride a bike. Would you give them their new bike and say “see you later” and drive away? Of course you wouldn’t, you would stay right beside your child as they learn. Even if they fell down, you’d be right there to encourage them to try again. My sleep training methods include parent involvement, as much or as little as you desire.  That way you never have to feel like your child is adjusting alone.

My belief is that as a parent, our brain is not wired to let our babies cry without comfort. I want every family I work with to feel completely comfortable and confident in the methods they will use to help their child sleep.

WILL MY CHILD CRY?

Parents should expect that there will be some crying during this process. With any change in routine, there will be protest from your child. After all, babies can’t say things like “hey, I actually preferred it when you were nursing me to sleep. Can we go back to that system?” Instead, they show their protest by crying. Every child has a different personality so the amount of crying differs from child to child.

I will never ask you to leave your child alone to cry. I will give you the tools to gently comfort your child while helping them learn self soothing and independent sleeping skills.

WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?

I had the privilege of being selected to participate in a world renowned training program with Sleep Sense founder Dana Obleman. My training consisted of a 3-day in person, intensive training course and a 3 month mentorship.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Colorado State University and have had a long career working with individuals and families in times of crisis and need. My passion is helping families and children.

I am a member of the Association for Professional Sleep Consultants.  As an international sleep organization, their mission it to promote the highest standard of practice for the professional sleep consulting industry. You will find me featured on their website for Colorado.

I currently serve on the board of the Northern Colorado Doula Association, as the social committee chair. Each year I take part in dozens of community volunteer opportunities and continued education courses.

I serve on the Advisory Board for Sleep Sense.  My role is to cultivate new and exciting additions to the certification and revamp current policies.

I am constantly expanding my knowledge and learning more and more about sleep, lactation, and newborn care through continued education.

CAN I STILL BREASTFEED WHILE SLEEP TRAINING?

YES! I am a huge advocate for breastfeeding and wholeheartedly believe in both the health benefits and bonding for mom and baby.  Sleep training can actually enhance a breastfeeding relationship because mom and baby are rested and baby can eat full meals.

I am able to assess basic breastfeeding difficulties and I work closely with several Northern Colorado lactation and developmental specialists. I am a huge advocate for a team approach to helping your family sleep again and will suggest we bring in another professional as needed.

Keep in mind that I also believe that FED IS BEST – no matter how you choose to feed your child, I’m here to teach you how to reach your family’s sleep goals.

CAN I CO-SLEEP WHILE SLEEP TRAINING MY CHILD?

The short answer is no, co-sleeping is not compatible with my program. I do work with many co-sleeping families that are ready to make the change to their child sleeping independently, in their own bed.

MY BABY HAS MEDICAL ISSUES, CAN I STILL USE YOUR SERVICES?

Children with medical issues can still benefit from sleep training however If I feel that the health problem is substantial or may hinder progress, I will ask parents to get feedback from their physician while working together. Please speak to your physician before starting our program if you have any concerns.  My sleep plans and advice are not a substitute for medical advice and I am not be able to advise parents on any health related issues.

I am happy to work as a team with other medical and developmental professionals, as we work on meeting your sleep goals. This includes lactation counselors, IBCLC, therapists, chiropractors, pediatric dentists, pediatricians, ENTs, and feeding specialist such as a speech language pathologist.

I am very familiar with preemies and their sleep needs and am happy to work with a family with a premature baby.

WHAT IF I DON'T LIVE IN NORTHERN COLORADO?

No problem! Thanks to technology, I offer Fort Collins sleep solutions, but I am also able to help parents from all over the world! All of my sleep packages can include phone or video consultations. I HAVE TWINS/TRIPLETS. WILL YOUR PROGRAM WORK FOR ME?

Yes! I love my twin and triplet families and feel so lucky to see sleep change their lives. The goals for multiples when sleeping are unique and require the need for predictability and routine. I’m here to guide you through any and all sleep challenges your twins or triplets may be facing.
